Rhinoplasty
is the most common cosmetic procedure
performed today. The procedure modifies the
nose by changing its size, or sculpturing
the nasal structures. So the nose is in harmony
with other facial features.
Surgery
may also improve nasal breathing when the
septum is deviated or the patient suffers
from allergies or sinus problems.
Twilight
sleep is administered by I.V., and the patient
in most cases is asleep throughout the procedure.
The operation usually takes one to two hours.
All incisions are internal except in rare
instances when the base or tip of the nose
must be narrowed. In all cases, the incisions
are well hidden.
So
the nose is in harmony with the other
facial features.
There
is minimal pain after nasal surgery and it
is usually controlled with mild analgesics.
A splint or cast is placed on the nose for
approximately five to six days.
Medication
is given to keep swelling at a minimum though
some swelling and bruising may occur around
the eyes usually lasting 7 to 10 days. When
the splint is removed there may be some nasal
swelling. This usually resolves quickly so
it is not obvious to friends and acquaintances.
The patient is restricted from strenuous physical
activities for approximately three weeks.
With
nasal surgery, there is a possibility of contour
irregularities, or asymmetries, which usually
resolve with time. On occasion a minor secondary
procedure is required.
