Chemical peeling is used to decrease the fine or coarse wrinkles that occur in the forehead, cheeks, around the eyes, crow's feet, and the upper lip. Part or all of the face may be peeled, depending on the needs of the individual patient. The chemical solution applied to the skin causes it to peel like a sunburn.

In this procedure the superficial layer of the skin actually sheds. The texture of the skin is improved, rejuvenating the skin and gives it a more youthful appearance.

Patients with a fair complexion, such as blondes and redheads, have a much better result with a peel than people with dark pigmentation. There is frequently a slight decrease in the pigmentation (color) of the skin depending upon the type of solution used.

The procedure is performed by applying a solution on the skin. Patients are sedated to control the burning sensation that may occur. Postoperatively the skin will continue to weep. During the "weeping" period, the patient is instructed to keep the skin covered with a special powder that helps a scab form. Ointments are used for several days to assist the scab as it separates from the skin. Redness of the skin is noticeable and can take four to six weeks to dissipate. After the procedure sun exposure is restricted for about three to six months followed by sunscreens. Scarring is possible, but has not occurred in any of our patients. Overall, the peel is a very satisfying procedure, decreasing the lines which are an obvious result of the aging process.
